STUDENTS FROM MOSSBOURNE’S ARCHITECTURE AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME WIN TOP PLACES NATIONAL COMPETITION

Aspiring architects at Mossbourne Sixth Form took part in a national school’s competition, by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB); the world’s largest professional body, for the construction sector.

The competition was to redevelop the site of the former Tilbury power station, on the banks of the Thames estuary in Essex. The brief focussed on adaptive reuse of the power station and reimaging the site, to support the local economy and natural environment.

Three teams took part; their ideas varied from a new cultural centre, to a wildlife nature reserve and a water park. Working with mentors from the London School of Architecture (LSA), the students developed their proposals and presented them in a filmed submission to the CIOB.

All three teams got through to the finals, and two of the teams won top places; gaining second and third prize in the national competition. This is the first year of the Architecture & Built Environment Programme and is a sign of the ambition it has; to give our students the best opportunities.
